How to reset the Iphone 3G during a black screen
Yesterday I had a very annoying problem with my Iphone 3G. Suddenly when trying to get it out of it's standby mode it shortly lighted up and froze. Just plain dead. I couldn't get it to respond anymore.
I regard the Iphone as the best mobile phone I have ever had. With all the different applications you can download from the appstore it's getting even better and better. Sound quality is also better than I ever wished. The only bad point is the battery life. But this is about the same with all other phones as well, when you are using push email on the phone.
But despite beeing good, a frozen iphone is not good. If you have to rely on your phone, for example when using it for business, this can be a real issue. You have to be sure that the phone works all the time. It is not allowed to freeze.
When my phone froze, I was afraid that the iphone was really dead. That it wouldn't work anymore and I would have to get a replacement, which of course would take several days... I was very happy when I found out how to solve the problem with the frozen iphone. Nonetheless this is unacceptable and should not have to happen.
I tried to press all buttons and all combinations of them, but nothing helped. When I came home I connected it to the electricity net, but that also didn't help. No reaction. Completely frozen.
Finally I connected it to my computer and realized it did get a connection to Itunes. That's good, but doesn't really solve the problem of the frozen iphone. Still the display was black.
If you get the same problem, here is what helps:
- Connect the Iphone to your computer. Make a backup of everything on the Iphone.
- Press Power and the "square"-button at the same time. Hold them pressed more than 4 seconds.
- While still pressing the square-button, let the power-button go. Hold it for at least 10 seconds (I had to hold it longer)
- Itunes comes up and connects to your Iphone.
- Make a restore. Be sure you make it as fast as possible, otherwise the Iphone is going to lock up again.
ITunes will take you through the procedure of restoring. You will get all your contacts, sms, emails, programs and more reinstalled.
I found it very annoying... if it happens when you are a long way from your computer, you have no telephone! I hope Apple will solve this problem as soon as possible.

My iPhone froze up while i was sitting in class at school and i freaked out and tryed hitting all of the buttoms and everything so then i went to put my sim card in my old black berry bold that i had and the battery was messed up in that so i put it in my old razor that had been thru hell and back and i was using it for like 5 minutes when i decided to google it and find out what to do and i found this and now my iPhone works again

but when i go on itunes , itunes show me that he cant read from iphone data so how can i do a back up?

u can just press the power and the squre button at the same time till u see the apple logo then let go as soon s u see the logo. This will reset the iphon w/o ny problem or any data lose. You don't need to connect the iphon to your pc to do this. good luck

Hey, thank you so much. It saved me ton of time and frustration. I also had the problem with the apple logo just wait a couple minutes and it will eventually reload to your home screen!
this whole day i have been worrying about my phone.I do alot of communications with my teachers.I just doo so much..without my iphone i felt handicapped.i didnt know the time..i didnt know the weather..and didnt have comminication with anybody...yes i relay on my phone.thnks to you..this really did helped!!!i was about to give up.

my phone is completely black and not dead. it wont charge or turn on. however , whenever i did this , itunes will not recognize it. i held the power and home button for two minutes and still nothing happened. ive tried everything. suggestions ?
hey it flippin worked!!!! but instead of backing it up and all that bs i just held the buttons down and it came on!!! =)
I have exactly the same problem, but my sleep/wake button doesn't work. any ideas on how i can get my phone working without that button/

i have the same problem except mine wont connect to itunes no connection

my problem is different. Black screen do not go away. Restored to defaults, detected by Itunes and when someone calls it rings... seems to be working well but... screen is black...

i tried all these steps multiple times and it still does not work. i have an iphone3g and the screen is competely black. when i plug it up to my computer it does nothing at all ,does not even recognize it . nothing is working and i really need my phone . alot of important things . thank you ,please respond asap if you can .
